Floating World

Step into a world where ink drifts across melting ice. Each print is born directly on the glacier’s surface, created with meltwater and natural ink. What remains is a quiet memory of something slowly disappearing.

DESCRIPTION
This artwork was created directly on the surface of Vatnajökull in Iceland, using glacier meltwater and natural ink made from vegetable soot. Within a floating frame, ink moves across meltwater gathered on the ice, guided by hand, wind, and time before being transferred to paper.

Each piece is one of a kind. Small imperfections remain as part of its origin, carrying the quiet traces of the glacier itself.

Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe, covering vast areas of southeast Iceland and feeding many outlet glaciers. It is a dominant presence in the landscape, constantly shifting, thinning, and reshaping the land beneath it.

This artwork comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Created at Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland, 2025.

This artwork was created directly on the surface of Breiðamerkurjökull in Iceland, using glacier meltwater and natural ink made from vegetable soot. The print captures a brief moment when ink and water met on the ice, shaped by hand, wind, and time.

Each piece is one of a kind. Small imperfections remain as part of its origin, carrying the quiet traces of the glacier itself.

Breiðamerkurjökull is a wide outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. Its retreat led to the formation of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, one of Iceland’s most well known glacial landscapes.

Where the story begins

Everything starts here among the crevasses and shifting ice. This is the landscape that shapes the project and the place I return to day after day. Each new series begins out there, walking through remote terrain, looking for the place where the work can start.

Ink on melting ice

Everything happens on site. No studio. No repeats. A few drops of ink, meltwater collected by hand, and the cold air moving across the surface. The process is simple but unpredictable, and each pattern appears only once before it disappears. The print becomes its trace, a unique moment held on paper.

Black and white abstract art with concentric swirling lines resembling a topographical map or wood grain, framed on a white wall. The artwork has the title "Vatnajökull" in red and a signature at the bottom right.

Would you hang a trace of the glacier on your wall?

  • Each print is made on high-quality cotton paper with non-toxic soot ink and meltwater collected on site. A small amount of natural soap helps the ink float, and nearly all of it is absorbed into the paper, ensuring no trace is left in the environment.

  • Every print begins on the glacier. I place a wooden frame on the ice, add soot-based ink to meltwater, and let the pattern form in a single moment. The result cannot be controlled or repeated. Imperfections are part of the story.

  • I live and work in a remote part of Iceland, where the nearest post office is two hours away. This is slow art, and delivery follows the same rhythm. I list the next shipping dates on the website so you know exactly when your piece will be sent.
